At Kristineberg Center for Marine Research, the latest developments in water robots are shown.

A development that is believed to play an important role in, among other things, the cultivation of algae at sea.

Programmed intelligence

It is expensive to go out by boat and to use remote controlled units is completely gone.

Autonomous robots believe can therefore be of great benefit, say researchers.

- All radio waves are attenuated below the surface.

You have no GPS, you can not communicate, you do not really know where you are.

You can not control remotely, but you have to program the intelligence on board, says Ivan Stenius, senior lecturer at KTH.

Several uses

The research is conducted by the Swedish Maritime Robotics Center.

A collaboration with, among others, the University of Gothenburg and the Royal Institute of Technology.

Researchers see several other uses for underwater robots.

- In this research project, we have three different utility areas.

Marine production, environmental monitoring, where the robots can take us to places we have never been, as well as defense and security, says Ivan Stenius.
