A mountaineering expert stated that the high summer temperatures do not prevent mountain sports enthusiasts from going out for walking or running in the mountain paths without realizing that they may be exposed to severe heat exhaustion that requires immediate hospitalization.

According to the National Search and Rescue Center, three medical evacuations have been carried out in the mountains of the eastern region since the beginning of this year, as a result of heat exhaustion.

Governmental and medical agencies in the eastern region are intensifying awareness campaigns to warn enthusiasts of walking on roads and off-road areas, and mountain climbers, of the dangers of practicing this sport in light of the high temperatures that reach 40 degrees Celsius during the daytime, which increases the chances of them being exposed to fatigue and loss of consciousness that may kill their lives. .

And one of the mountaineering enthusiasts, Muhammad Al-Ketbi, stated that mountain sports practitioners should reduce their activity during the summer due to the high temperatures and increased humidity that causes difficulty breathing.

He stressed the need for mountain sports enthusiasts to follow some measures to ensure their safety, such as drinking sufficient quantities of water, observing the hottest times during the day, in addition to going out with escorts, and carrying maps to guide them when phone batteries run out.

He stressed that phone coverage is usually weak in these areas, and whether the trip is on foot or by vehicle, it is necessary to carry a printed copy of the map showing mountain paths and the nature of roads, because the map helps determine the location and main directions in case the GPS battery runs out, or a smartphone.

For her part, Dr. Maryam Al Hammadi said that practicing mountain sports during the summer may cause several risks, especially when the weather is humid and hot, the evaporation process becomes difficult, in addition to the fact that hot air does not help to cool the dilated blood vessels, which increases the risk of dehydration or a stroke. Sun and heat exhaustion.

In addition, the National Center for Search and Rescue stated that a rescue and medical evacuation of a wounded (Lebanese) mountaineer in Wadi Al-Helou was carried out last February, after the Kalba Police Station received a report stating that there was an injured person who sustained a leg injury after falling from a mountainous area in Sweet Valley.

He added that he carried out, in coordination with the Dibba Al-Fujairah Police, a rescue and medical evacuation mission for a 28-year-old woman (Saudi) in a mountainous area in Dibba Al-Fujairah, last March, after the Dibba Al-Fujairah Police Operations Room received a report that a girl had suffered severe fatigue while climbing the mountains.

He pointed out that, in coordination with the Al-Tuwaiyin Comprehensive Police Station and the Civil Defense, Al-Tuwaiyin Branch, he carried out a rescue and medical evacuation mission for a senior citizen (88 years) in the Dibba Mountains, last Tuesday, after he was subjected to severe fatigue and fatigue at the highest mountain peak in the region during the afternoon, and upon arrival. He received first aid and the necessary treatment, and his health condition stabilized.

Dehydration and heat exhaustion

Doctor Maryam Al Hammadi confirmed that sports practitioners during the summer should drink a lot of water during exercise, not exercise during the hottest times during the day, wear light clothes and stop exercising as soon as signs and symptoms of dehydration and heat exhaustion appear, and move to a shaded place to rest. .

Al Hammadi stated that in the event of a person suffering from heat exhaustion, his companions should call an ambulance, and try to cool him by available methods, such as moving him to a shaded and cool place, covering him with wet blankets, and giving him water to drink.
