Rwanda is hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting this week, including the Women's Forum opening on Monday June 20, while some 30 country representatives are due to meet on Thursday June 23 and Friday June 24, including Prime Ministers British Boris Johnson and Canadian Justin Trudeau.

One of the biggest events ever hosted by Rwanda, however, occurs in a very controversial context, Kigali being involved in the affair of British migrants as well as a crisis with the DRC.

For weeks,

Rwanda has been accused by its Congolese neighbor of supporting the M23 rebellion

, which recently took up arms in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Ahead of the Commonwealth summit

, Kinshasa therefore called on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to convince Rwandan President Paul Kagame to stop what the Congolese government considers "

aggression

 ".

As tension continues to rise between the two neighbours, Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo wanted to be reassuring: "

Visitors can be sure that there are no security problems in Rwanda

", he said. she said at a press conference Friday, June 17.

The country is also under fire from critics after the signing, last April, of a partnership with the United Kingdom providing for

the deportation to Kigali of thousands of migrants

who crossed the Channel illegally.

This project is led by British Interior Minister Priti Patel, but Prince Charles, expected this week in the Rwandan capital,

described as "

terrible

 "

.

Despite the controversy, the Rwandan authorities hope to derive significant economic benefits from the event and present Rwanda as a future international financial center.
