New York, a place with a kitchen in

or, why not, a palatial mansion where scenes from

were filmed , an impressive chalet

or

.

Can you imagine being able to rent one of these spaces by the hour, whether for a party, a yoga class, a cooking class, a product presentation or a

team building

meeting ?

Well, the idea came from the

Catalan

start-up

Spathios

, which in the blink of an eye has turned

the events market

in Madrid upside down with

its

airbnb

of charming spaces

.

Pol Hevia and Joaquim Tresserra

realized one day that everything happened in the same places, that in the street there were a lot of spectacular spaces that could not be accessed and that in Spain there was no place that united them.

So,

with the objective set in the business world

and based on the fact that the context in which an activity takes place has a direct impact on it, in September 2020 they set up a web/app that already has

more than 2,000

charming

spaces throughout the country.

And more than 400 of them, including the string from the beginning, are in Madrid.

"

Our mission is to unite the most unique spaces and make them accessible to companies

. And that does not mean they are expensive," says Hevia, CEO of Sphatios and a participant in the school who believes that "creativity happens in the most special contexts ".

Although companies are its main

target

-they have a business side-,

Spathios is open to everyone, including individuals

.

There are those who celebrate "baptisms, communions, pre-wedding parties..." in them.

The operation is simple, "very similar to booking an

airbnb

" explains Hevia.

In fact,

with just three clicks you can get the day and hours

once you are registered.

"We have pulverized the times to prevent people from always ending up in the same places," adds the creator of Spathios, whose

online

page includes a 360º tour with which the user can visit the space virtually.

"It's going to be super revolutionary

," adds the entrepreneur.

As in the vacation rental website, each site has its rules, such as the minimum reservation time and the activities that are allowed.

"There are people who list their private homes and there are profiles that do not do it for money, they have simply invested money in their property and want to share it with others," says the businessman.

"

There are people who are earning competitive salaries

. There is a couple from Barcelona who have earned more than 40,000 euros, a huge salary just for opening and closing their house," he adds.

Nico Fuster is one of those hosts.

Together with a partner, he operates the

La Camaleónica

space , known in Spathios as

La Casa de la Marquesa

, where the first season of the

Elite

series was filmed, as well as other titles from Movistar, HBO, Netflix, Globomedia and A3Media.

Its incorporation to this website has opened "a wide range" to the owners of this house, which offers its own catering service... "It has given us more work in three months than in a year on other platforms, and

they have more filter with the clientele

. It has brought us filming and powerful company events. The commissions are higher than on other platforms but it compensates us," says Fuster.

200 more spaces each month

Business is growing at "breakneck" speed, adding 200 spaces each month thanks largely to word of mouth.

"In the first four months of the year, we have billed the same as last year

," says Hevia about the accounts of Spathios, which already employs 30 people.

"Starting in Covid has not gone so badly for us. We have grown hand in hand with the economic recovery. And

remote work benefits a company like us

," says the CEO, referring to the increase in

team building

activities that there are today in day to recover the trust and closeness between the teams that was lost with the pandemic.

An avant-garde single-family home.EM

It is not the only business.

Recently, in Madrid, they have rented a space for an important motoring event, which has closed a house for a week to show luxury cars to its clients, and in these unique spaces

advertisements, film productions, presentations of product or

brainstorming

.

They started the business in Barcelona, but today they grow and bill more in Madrid.

In the capital, "customers are getting bigger and more loyal

," says Hevia.

Although there is still work to be done.

"In Barcelona, we have emblematic properties.

Almost all of Gaudí's works are registered

and in Madrid we want to do the same," she points out.

With more than 20,000 hours of reservations behind it, Spathios also has a presence in Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Malaga, Gerona, Tarragona or Zaragoza, among other cities, and has just expanded internationally to London.

"The plan is Rome, Paris and Berlin until 2024. And then make the leap to the US

," says the CEO.

Looking to the future, they seek to be able to offer a complete service that covers all the needs of the tenants -catering, waiters, furniture, decoration- and that now only the owners offer.

Because "its mission" is not only to facilitate the rental of singular spaces, but

"to organize complete events in a few

clicks

"

.
