The national memorial site inaugurated on Saturday is located on the island where right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik attacked young people at a summer camp organized by the Social Democratic Youth Union AUF.

In his speech, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støhre emphasized the importance of a memorial for the whole nation, as a reminder of all those who have been lost.

- It is a place where our children and grandchildren can learn about what happened and the consequences of right-wing extremism and hatred, he said in the speech that was broadcast live on Norwegian NRK.

The former prime ministers Erna Sohlberg and Jens Stoltenberg were also present during the inauguration ceremony, together with Norway's Crown Prince Haakon.

Among the spectators were also survivors, relatives and rescue workers.
