The work of closing the space in front of the cathedral is currently in full swing.

But previously there was a burial ground on the site and there was probably a wooden church here in the 1000s.

- The skeletons we have found are quite long and have had strong muscle attachments and the like.

This indicates that they have belonged to a social elite, says Linda Qviström, archaeologist at the Upplands Museum.

The excavations of the site outside Uppsala Cathedral were carried out in 2019 in connection with the cathedral's top ornaments being taken down and renovated.

This required a huge construction crane that needed to be placed where the old graves were.

Funeral gifts are missing

The graves are the oldest discovered - confirmed Christians - found in Uppsala.

The three oldest tombs can be from the 10th century.

- They have been buried according to Christian traditions without, for example, burial gifts, says Linda Qviström.

The skeleton is now in the Upplandsmuseet's premises in Morgongåva and the results of the excavations have been compiled in a report of several hundred pages.
