Two dead and one wounded in shooting outside a church in Alabama, USA

Two people were killed and another injured in a shooting outside a church in Vistavia Hills in Alabama, in the southern United States, the city police announced today, explaining that they had arrested a suspect.

Vistavia Hills Police said on its Facebook page that three people at St Stephen's Church were shot.

According to Agence France-Presse, the attacker entered the church and shot three people, two of whom died.

It confirmed that it had arrested a suspect and that "the threat is removed."

The shooting took place in front of the church shortly after 6:00 pm (23:00 GMT) during a luncheon, according to the St Stephen's website.

The repeated mass shootings have sparked widespread outrage in the United States, where a majority of the population supports tougher gun laws, but opposition from many lawmakers and Republican voters has long been an obstacle to passing major changes.

On May 24, 21 people, including 19 children, were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Yuvaldi, Texas.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 20,000 people have been killed with firearms in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which also counts suicides in its data.
