The Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that Israel is secretly coordinating with the United States about many of the air strikes it is carrying out in Syria, with Washington agreeing to the majority of these strikes.

The officials confirmed to the newspaper that the US military is helping the Israelis locate targets inside Syrian territory, noting that the US allies are facing in Syria a crowded field of armed groups backed by Iran.

Washington was keen that the Israeli raids on Syria did not interfere with its leadership of the international coalition facing the Islamic State.

According to the newspaper, the secrecy surrounding this previously undeclared coordination;

It reveals how Washington sought to support its Israeli allies without being drawn into the Israeli "shadow war" against Iran.

The newspaper continues to say that the vast majority of Israeli air strikes approved by the US military command did not contribute to Washington in determining any of its goals.

Current and former US officials have also made clear that the United States does not review all of the Israeli operations it has carried out in Syria.

The US review focuses on Israeli missions in eastern Syria, which pass near the US military base at Al-Tanf, located in the south of the country, near the borders with Iraq and Jordan, and this is one of the Israeli ways of attacking Syria.

Russian protest

A representative of the Israeli army refused to comment on this news, and the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) refused to discuss the procedures for coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv.

On Wednesday, Moscow expressed to the Israeli ambassador its "grave concern" after the air strikes that closed Damascus International Airport last week.

Which led to the disruption of international civil air navigation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said - after Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov met with Israeli Ambassador Alexander Ben-Zvi in Moscow - "Serious concern was expressed over the Israeli Air Force's attack on the 10th of June (current) on Damascus civilian airport, which was destroyed runway and navigation equipment and disrupt international civil air traffic.

"The ambassador was informed that the justification given by the Israeli side regarding the strike...is not convincing, and that Moscow expects additional clarifications," she added.

Israel has established a "deconfliction mechanism" with Russia to prevent the two countries from colliding inadvertently during Israeli strikes since the beginning of Russia's direct military intervention in Syria in September 2015.
