Bangladesh: Lightning strikes kill 6 people, including children

Police in Bangladesh said on Friday that six people, including three children, were killed by lightning strikes across the country.

Officer Shah Kamal said deaths were reported from three separate lightning strikes in Mymensingh district.

Kamal added that all those who died were either working in the fields or they were fishing.

Officials said the heavy rains forced authorities to suspend operations at an international airport after floodwaters inundated large areas of the north-east of the country, causing the displacement of tens of thousands of people.

Airport manager Hafez Ahmed said that flight operations were suspended after reports that flood waters were approaching the runway of Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.

Heavy rains over the past few days have triggered those floods, with the monsoons hitting Bangladesh and parts of India's Meghalaya and Assam states.
