THE ESSENTIAL

  • Emmanuel Macron and his German and Italian counterparts could go to kyiv this Thursday.

The Elysée has not confirmed this trip, announced by several Italian and German media.

  • Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his "gratitude" to the United States for the "new tranche of aid of one billion dollars" that his counterpart Joe Biden announced to him on Wednesday evening.

US aid includes additional artillery and shells.

  • On the ground, the fighting is concentrated in Lyssychantsk and Severodonetsk, two key cities in the Donbass.

The Ukrainian authorities have admitted in recent days that their troops have been driven out of the city center of Severodonetsk, and only have “complicated communication channels” with them after the destruction of all the bridges to Lysychansk.

  • In Severodonetsk, the Ukrainian forces are notably entrenched in the Azot chemical plant, with more than 500 civilians inside, according to the mayor of the city.

Moscow proposed on Tuesday a "humanitarian corridor" that would allow the evacuation of these civilians to territories controlled by the Russians, but kyiv did not confirm it.

War in Ukraine: For Macron, new discussions with kyiv are necessary

6:51 a.m .: Zelensky says his “gratitude” for the new American aid

Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday his "gratitude" to the Americans for the new tranche of military aid that his counterpart Joe Biden had announced to him earlier in the evening on the telephone.

“The United States announced a new reinforcement of our defense, a new slice of aid of one billion dollars”, confirmed the Ukrainian president.

This support "is particularly important for our defense in the Donbass".

US aid includes additional artillery and shells, as well as anti-ship missiles.

6:45 am: Moscow accuses kyiv of having prevented an evacuation of civilians

Russia on Wednesday accused kyiv forces of preventing the evacuation through a "humanitarian corridor" of civilians from a factory in Severodonetsk.

“The Russian side has provided a humanitarian corridor to allow the evacuation of civilians from the Azot chemical plant in Severodonetsk.

Despite all these measures, (…) the kyiv authorities cynically caused the humanitarian operation to fail,” the Russian Defense Ministry accused.

On Tuesday, Russia said it would set up a "humanitarian corridor" on Wednesday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. (2 hours more in Paris) to allow civilians who have taken refuge in the Azot factory to leave it in the direction of territories controlled by Moscow forces in the north.

The Russian Defense Ministry further accused the Ukrainian forces of having “violated the ceasefire several times” and of “using the humanitarian pause to redeploy to more advantageous (combat) positions”. .

However, it was not possible to independently verify these claims.

6:42 a.m .: Turkey wants to host a meeting on Ukrainian cereals

Turkey is ready to host "a four-way meeting" with the United Nations, Russia and Ukraine to organize the transport of grain to the Black Sea, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu said on Wednesday.

Millions of tons of wheat are stuck in Ukrainian ports under blockade or Russian occupation and their transport is made dangerous by the presence of mines.

According to the Turkish minister, the United Nations has submitted a plan to facilitate exports.

“This plan could work without clearing the sea lanes,” he said, referring to the establishment of “secure lines” in the Black Sea.

6:38 am: Two Americans fighting in Ukraine missing

Two Americans who volunteered to fight with Ukrainian forces have been missing for several days and may have been captured by Russia, lawmakers and family members said Wednesday.

Alexander Drueke and Andy Tai Huynh, both from the state of Alabama, took part in the fighting north of the city of Kharkiv.

Alexander Drueke's mother told the American channel CNN that they were "presumed prisoners of war, but (that) this (had) not been confirmed".

The US Embassy in kyiv “could not verify that he is with the Russians, all they can verify is that he is missing,” Bunny Drueke added.
