Agents of the Seprona of the Civil Guard have closed an illegal slaughterhouse located on a plot of land in El Molar (Madrid) that did not have the corresponding sanitary controls and that

sold the meat of ducks, goats, pigs and donkeys to restaurants and Chinese food stores

from Madrid and from different parts of the country.

The agents have carried out inspections of premises in eight provinces where meat products were also distributed by courier.

The activity, completely clandestine, was located in the area of influence of the first outbreak of avian flu detected in Madrid last February, according to the Madrid Civil Guard Command.

The agents

located a total of 650 animals on the farm - chickens, ducks, goats, pigs and donkeys -

and ordered their sacrifice after detecting a positive for salmonella enterica.

Six people, five men and one woman, all of Asian origin and responsible for the slaughterhouse, were arrested due to the unsanitary situation in which the facilities and animals were found.

In addition to the slaughterhouse, they had

a butcher shop in El Molar where they sold the goods to customers in the area.

They are also attributed a crime of mistreatment as they lack animal welfare measures and stunning methods in slaughter to avoid unnecessary suffering, as established by law.

The group had points of sale in Aranjuez, Villaviciosa de Odón and Fuenlabrada, Usera (Madrid), Lebrija (Seville), Lucena (Córdoba), Fuente del Fresno (Ciudad Real), Manises and Alfafar (Valencia), Lugones (Asturias), Liencres (Cantabria) and Basauri (Vizcaya).

The operation had its origin in the surveillance carried out by Seprona in the fight against food fraud, reinforced

after the first case of avian flu was detected in the Community of Madrid in February.

Unsanitary facilities and sick animals

As part of these operations, a plot was located where animals were sacrificed and the burning of their remains was observed.

The agents discovered that those responsible for the slaughterhouse

removed the meat from the slaughtered animals in vans or cars without a cold chain.

On some occasions, the merchandise was transported to a polygon located in Fuenlabrada, from where

it was distributed to restaurants run by Asian citizens

;

in others, an establishment kept the meat in its refrigerators and later distributed it through a courier service.

The transport was carried out without any type of sanitary control, so, after carrying out all the administrative checks, Seprona proceeded to register the slaughterhouse with judicial authorization and the collaboration of inspectors from the General Directorate of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of the Community of Madrid, with the support of the Subdirectorate General for Food Safety and Environmental Health.

In the operation

, 350 kilos of meat were intervened, ready for distribution to the public.

In addition to the six detainees,

12 people have been investigated for crimes of fraud, against the market and consumers

and against public health.
