June 15 is the "National Low Carbon Day" in 2022. CNOOC launched the first domestic offshore carbon dioxide storage demonstration project. After nearly 10 months of research and development and construction, the construction of all equipment of the project was officially completed at the Qingdao base in Shandong.

The offshore carbon dioxide storage project is a supporting environmental protection project for the Enping 15-1 oilfield group. After service, the carbon dioxide emissions that can be stored in seabed reservoirs exceeds 1.46 million tons.

It is reported that the Enping 15-1 oilfield group where the offshore carbon dioxide storage project is located is located in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, about 200 kilometers south of Shenzhen. Four offshore platforms will be built and seven oilfields will be developed at the same time. After full production, the daily crude oil output will exceed 4,700 tons. It is one of the key energy security projects in my country's "14th Five-Year Plan".

The offshore carbon dioxide storage module weighs about 750 tons. The core equipment includes carbon dioxide compressor skids, molecular sieves, coolers, etc. It is an important device for the Enping 15-1 central platform. To the underground salt water layer, permanently stored in the depths of the stratum.

Carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage technology is internationally recognized as an important measure to effectively promote carbon emission reduction, and it is one of the key technologies to achieve the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Compared with land storage, offshore carbon storage in Enping Oilfield has the advantages of easy site selection, high safety, small environmental impact, and large storage scale.

After intensive research by domestic manufacturers, the project has realized the full localization of key equipment for carbon dioxide storage. It adopts the unique modularization and skid arrangement of offshore platforms, and applies cutting-edge technologies such as phase control, pulse control, and coupling and vibration analysis. The first set of supercritical macromolecular compressors and the first set of composite carbon dioxide molecular sieve dewatering skids suitable for the marine high-humidity and high-salt environment have been developed, and the offshore carbon dioxide capture, reinjection, and storage engineering technology system, complete sets of equipment and engineering experience have been formed.

The application of this project is the first in my country and even in Asia. It is estimated that about 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide can be stored every year, and the accumulated carbon dioxide storage is more than 1.46 million tons, which is equivalent to planting nearly 14 million trees or stopping nearly 1 million cars. A new path has been explored to achieve the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and to promote the green development of offshore oil and gas fields, and to prepare technical reserves for the future promotion of "shore carbon into the sea", further helping the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to achieve green and low-carbon development.
