Passers-by hydrate themselves with water or enter a store.

Madrid is in the middle of a heat wave -the

worst in June for 20 years

according to Aemet- and it shows on the street.

But there are those who cannot flee.

Waiters, sweepers and operators are exposing themselves these days to a meteorological hell from which they cannot hide.

"How is it going? With resignation and based on water," says the owner of one of the food, drink and candy stalls that surround the Plaza de Callao, where now the sale of cold water is mainly advertised.

"I hope I get the primitive tonight

," says Alberto, who has been enduring any inclement weather on the same avenue for 49 years.

Gran Vía asphalt burns, granite absorbs heat, but plastic much more.

It is material for Victor Hugo's suit, another of those who cannot change where he works, nor what he wears.

He spends the whole day dressed in a Tweety Bird costume, where the wind chill multiplies;

"I feel 44 degrees in here," says Victor, who

every hour or two frees himself from Tweety's suit

to drink water, sit down, get rid of "the feeling of suffocation" and be able to continue his day.

"Looks like this is just the beginning," says Victor.

Although the State Meteorological Agency published yesterday a possible drop in temperatures in Madrid from next Sunday.

Whatever happens to the thermometer, Victor will live it, he doesn't leave the Tweety suit all summer.

"We need money to pay for a house, food...".

There is no romance behind that suit.

They don't choose it

.

Victor pronounces to two passing tourists "photo friend... don't you want a photo?"

and he says that even though he thinks he is very good at this job because he has always been "very sociable" he would love to find another one, where he would not be tied to this wind chill.
