[Global Times Comprehensive Report] In order to strengthen the recruitment of professionals from Hong Kong and Macao, Taiwan's "Ministry of the Interior" has revised the "Measures for Hong Kong and Macao Residents to Enter Taiwan and Residence and Settlement Permits".

According to Taiwan's "Central News Agency" report on the 14th, the licensing method has completed the announcement process, and the "Minister of the Interior" Xu Guoyong signed the announcement and implemented it on the 13th.

The amendments add that specific professionals, professionals and students from Hong Kong or Macau can extend their stay for 6 months on the grounds of finding a job, with a maximum of 1 year; Hong Kong and Macau residents who have obtained a master’s and doctoral degree in Taiwan will receive a discount for their doctorate and master’s degree. 2 years of arrival and 1 year of continuous residence in Taiwan.

The licensing measures were originally scheduled to be announced on May 1, but the Green Camp has postponed it until now because of "security concerns".

Affected by the situation and the epidemic, the number of Hong Kong students studying in Taiwan has increased since 2019.

According to information from Taiwan's "Ministry of Education", the total number of Hong Kong students studying in tertiary institutions in Taiwan in the 2020 academic year reached 7,807, an increase of about 14% over 2019, of which about 2,923 were freshmen.

However, Taiwan is not very attractive for graduating Hong Kong students.

At present, Hong Kong students want to obtain permanent residency in Taiwan and obtain the same working conditions as Taiwanese. There are two main ways: one is to work in Taiwan for 5 years, settle for more than 183 days, and the average monthly salary in the last year exceeds the basic salary by 2%. Second, first return to Hong Kong and Macau to work for two years and then stay in Taiwan for one year without leaving the country for more than 30 days, or two years in Taiwan and more than 270 days of residence.

Hong Kong students generally prefer the first method, but it is difficult for the average monthly salary to exceed NT$48,000 in five years.

Some Hong Kong students said that after working for a few years after a master's degree, their salary in Taiwan was only nearly NT$40,000.

There are also Hong Kong students who bluntly stated that the monthly salary of graduating from universities on the island is NT$32,000-33,000, and it is difficult to see opportunities to improve the quality of life in Taiwan.

Hong Kong colleges and universities began to recruit Taiwanese students in 2008. According to statistics from the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Commission, there were about 1,021 Taiwanese students in Hong Kong in 2019, of which 303 were studying at CUHK, 180 at HKUST, 167 at PolyU, and 166 at Hong Kong University. .

More than half of Taiwanese students left Hong Kong after the "revision turmoil".

In recent years, there have not been many Taiwanese students studying in Hong Kong schools.

In 2021, the statistics of graduates from well-known high schools in Taiwan entering Hong Kong universities show that only one student from Taichung Girls’ High School and one from Beiyi Girls’ High School will be admitted to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, 4 of Fuxingshi will be admitted to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and one will be admitted to Chinese University. .
