Spain experienced a new day of "extremely worrying" heat on Tuesday with 43 degrees expected in the south of the country, more than ten degrees above seasonal norms.

“This early heat wave” with temperatures beating “records and which is added to another heat wave less than a month ago” is an “extremely worrying” fact, declared the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, on public television.

An early wave that will hit France until the weekend, a new sign of climate change, reinforcing the worrying dryness of the soil and the risk of fires.

  • With peaks over 40 degrees, a heat wave suffocated Spain on Monday before reaching France on Tuesday, an “abnormal” episode for the period caused by global warming.

  • This episode, which comes days after the hottest May in at least 100 years in Spain, results in "extreme temperatures", said Ruben del Campo, spokesman for the Spanish meteorological agency (Aemet). .

  • Caused by a localized depression between the Azores and Madeira which gradually brings very hot air from the Maghreb back to Western Europe, the heat wave began this weekend and "could last until the end of the week,” he added.

  • According to Aemet, temperatures will exceed 40 degrees in the center and south of the country and could even rise to 43 degrees in Andalusia, in the south, especially in Cordoba and Seville.

  • And the mercury will not drop below 20 or 25 degrees at night in these parts of Spain.

  • According to scientists, the multiplication of heat waves, particularly in Europe, is a consequence of global warming.

Greenhouse gas emissions increase their power, duration and frequency.

  • Over the last ten months, Spain has gone through four episodes of extreme temperatures.

  • A heat wave in August 2021 when the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in the country was broken (47.4 degrees in Montoro, in the south), "unusually high" temperatures between Christmas and the day of the 'An, an early wave in May and the current wave.

  • On Monday, the maximum temperature was recorded in Montoro, in the province of Cordoba, with 42.9 degrees.

  • An exceptional and early heat wave which will hit France until the weekend, a new sign of climate change, reinforcing the worrying dryness of the soil and the risk of fires.

  • With the arrival of hot air from the Maghreb via Spain which is already suffocating, the south-west of the country will be affected first on Tuesday with temperatures of up to 36°C.

  • But it is all of France which will be gradually hit by the weekend, before a drop in temperatures probably expected on Sunday.

35°C to 39°C are expected during the peak between Thursday and Saturday in the southern half, with peaks over 40°C locally in the Southwest, according to Météo-France.

And between 30°C and 35°C in the northern half on Friday and Saturday.
