Woman dies after being stabbed at German university

A 30-year-old woman has died of injuries sustained in an apparent knife attack on students on a German university campus, police and prosecutors said Sunday.

The woman is an assistant professor who was attending a seminar at the Hamm-Lipstadt University of Applied Sciences when the attack happened Friday.

Two other young women and a young man were injured in the attack before students were able to control the attacker.

On Saturday, a 34-year-old suspect was transferred to a psychological care center after the public prosecutor said he likely suffers from schizophrenia.

And on Sunday, the university announced in a statement posted on its website that it had received "with great sadness" the news of the patient's death.

Preparations are being completed for the farewell ceremonies scheduled for Monday.

The suspect was a university student and targeted the victims with two knives, according to the Public Prosecution Office.

A 22-year-old student was stabbed eight times in the abdomen, which required emergency surgery, and it is believed that her life is no longer in danger, while the other two victims, a 22-year-old young man and woman, sustained less serious injuries.

The suspect was released Friday from a psychiatric hospital he was transferred to after attempting suicide, according to the Public Prosecution Office.
