"Markus", who comes from the Gothenburg area, visited the ADHD clinic in Copenhagen for the first time in December 2016. He was diagnosed and started taking various types of drug-classified ADHD medication.

The medical records show that Markus had great freedom as to which medicines he should take and in what large doses he could do so (See fact box).

- The doctor said that I had to test myself and try it out, says Markus.

Got worse

He first experienced a positive effect of the medicine, but after a few months the situation got worse for Markus.

He developed obsessive-compulsive disorder, often skipped sleep and got into conflicts with his family.

- I had difficulties when I started taking medication.

I had needed guidance in life, but just got more and more medicine, it was completely irresponsible.

He felt worse and worse and eventually the situation became acute.

In February 2018, a doctor and two police officers came to his home and took him to compulsory psychiatric care.

In the medical record from the compulsory care, the doctor states that Markus has suffered from an acute and transient psychosis, probably caused by uncontrolled ADHD medication.

Anxiety and nightmares

Even today, 4 years later, Markus has problems with anxiety attacks, stress and nightmares, which he believes are caused by the medication and the subsequent compulsory care.

The doctor at the ADHD clinic in Copenhagen does not want to participate in an interview, but writes in an email to SVT that they had regular contact with Markus during this period and that he is welcome to contact them if he has any views on the treatment. .
