THE ESSENTIAL

  • Legislative elections take place on June 12 and 19.

About 48 million registered voters are called upon to elect their 577 representatives to the National Assembly for the next five years, among more than 6,300 candidates.

  • According to some polls, the presidential party could lose the absolute majority in the Assembly, the Together coalition winning only between 24.5 and 28% of the voting intentions.

But a victory for Nupes, a coalition of the left, remains unlikely for the time being.

  • On the move in the Tarn yesterday, Emmanuel Macron went to the front.

In a long speech given from the village of Puycelsi, the president castigated Jean-Luc Mélenchon's recent harsh criticism of the police and pinned down Nupes' "bans and taxation project".

8:17 am: Last day of official campaign for the candidates

After those from abroad, the French overseas and in France are expected to go to the polls this weekend to choose their deputies.

On the eve of the first round of voting, the campaign for the legislative elections officially ends on the air of deja vu, with Emmanuel Macron who poses, as during the presidential election, as an opponent of the "extreme" to maintain a majority not guaranteed according to surveys.

Six weeks after the presidential election in April, the three candidates who came out on top find themselves in the legislative elections, with the winner Emmanuel Macron who indirectly faces the RN Marine Le Pen and the rebellious Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

But this time, the duel has settled between Emmanuel Macron's camp and the left-wing alliance formed around Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI-PS-EELV-PCF), which the polls give neck and neck, with abstention as arbitrator.

It could reach a new record, between 52 and 56%, beyond the 51.3% of June 11, 2017. To find out more, it's here:
