Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said Friday that Beijing has taken an objective position on the Ukraine issue, and will respond firmly if someone wants to use this issue as a pretext to harm China's interests.

"During the talks (between the Chinese defense minister and his US counterpart), the Chinese side said that Beijing has always adhered to an objective and fair stance on the Ukraine issue, and made active efforts to achieve peace and advance negotiations," Wu Qian was quoted as saying by the Cailian News Agency.

"China, as a responsible country, will continue to play a constructive role, however, if someone wants to use the Ukraine issue as a pretext to harm China's rights and interests, Beijing will definitely take resolute countermeasures," he stressed.

Yesterday, Friday, on the sidelines of the international security conference "Shangri-La Dialogue" in Singapore, a bilateral meeting was held between Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fengyi and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

After the talks, Wu Tsian gave a briefing to reporters covering the event.

The Shangri-La Dialogue is the largest annual security conference in Asia and is held annually in Singapore.
