• Las Ketchup interview, this is how they are 15 years after 'Aserejé', the song that changed their lives

  • Music Las Ketchup: José María García and Grease inspired the Aserejé

One of the catchiest rhythms in the history of Spanish music was the one danced by the sisters Lola, Pilar and Lucía Muñoz,

Las Ketchup

,

with the Aserejé.

Twenty years have passed since

that social phenomenon

and certain urban legends are still in the air that link the unpronounceable chorus to demonic influences, initiations into satanic rites or drug use.

The daughters of

Cordovan guitarist Juan Muñoz 'El Tomate'

have actively and passively denied that "Aserjé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere. Sebiunouba majabi an de bugui an de buididipí..." had that origin.

That

One Hit Wonder

created

by the composer Queco,

who had written for Remedios Amaya and the Gipsy Kings,

sold more than eight million copies

and

has been played on YouTube almost 130 million times,

but disagreements with the record companies caused the disappearance of the trio.

Two of the sources of inspiration are, to say the least, curious.

The first thing you hear of the song "

Look what's coming around the corner..."

was taken from José María García's radio program and at the beginning of the song there are 16 bars that are quite similar to the main theme of

the movie Grease (1978), 'You're the one that I want'.

The artists won a small fortune, but the one who became a millionaire was the creator because

of each sale he pocketed 1.2 euros.

New friends appeared in order to take advantage, but they were not stupid and immediately pushed them away.

When in 2006 they represented Spain in

Eurovision, remaining third from the bottom,

they decided to return to normality.

Lola, Pilar and Lucía in Nice in 2002GTRES

It is said that they could do something big again, but until that time comes, if it ever does, the three sisters have thrown themselves into their studies.

Pilar (43) decided to take drama classes

because she wanted to succeed as an actress, but her dream was cut short, so she set up a hairdressing salon, got married and had two children

.

Lola (42) finished her career in Labor Sciences with fits and starts

while she was doing promotions and since she didn't like it, she decided to study something else, so she opted for Flamencology.

Her intention is to publish a biography about her father.

She has a daughter

.

And Lucía (39) continued to be linked to music

, but her earnings came from hairdressing.

She has two children.

The trio has two other siblings, Rocío and Juanma 'El Tomate',

who were not involved in that summer success of 2002.

The trio fondly remembers that smash hit that made them tour practically the entire planet and of which they keep a

special memory of their stay in South Africa and Thailand.
