The queues for the security checks at Arlanda Airport are due to the fact that Swedavia's recruitment of personnel has not been at the same pace as the upswing in air traffic.

Minister of Justice and Home Affairs Morgan Johansson (SocDem) today criticized some of the fact that the process has been slow.

- The foresight has left a lot to be desired.

If you had started the recruitments earlier, you would never have ended up in this situation, he says.

But according to Charlotte Ljunggren, marketing manager at Swedavia, this is not a lack of foresight.

- We worked during the pandemic with a number of scenarios, and this great recovery of flying was one of the scenarios we were prepared for.

The problem is that we have difficulty recruiting, partly because we have long lead times for those we are to hire.

Long trial periods

In addition to the training, anyone applying for a job as a security inspector at an airport must be tested by authorities such as the Swedish Transport Agency and Säpo.

The longest trials have taken 10-12 weeks, as even these processing times have been longer during the pandemic.

Now, however, the authorities' trial periods must have returned to normal levels, which means that the process takes a total of about 4-5 weeks.

- We also compete for these skills with other companies in the hospitality industry that will also recruit a lot now after the pandemic, says Charlotte Ljunggren.
