The border between Finland and Russia is currently barely marked with signs.

But after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Finland now wants to strengthen its border protection through a change in the law, reports Reuters.

What Finland fears above all is that Russia will send large numbers of migrants as a weapon in a hybrid operation.

The approach is similar to what the EU accused Belarus of last year when hundreds of migrants from the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa got stuck on the Polish border.

Critical points

A large majority of Finland's members of parliament believe that stronger barriers should be built, according to a survey conducted by Yle.

Those who are in favor of the proposal do not see it as realistic to build a fence along the entire border, but rather in critical areas.

The change in the law could also mean that new roads are built to facilitate the patrolling of the border, writes Reuters.
