Three people were wounded in a drone attack that took place on a major highway in the vicinity of the city of Erbil, according to a statement of the Counter-Terrorism Service in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The drone exploded in a place 3 kilometers from a new building of the US consulate that is still under construction, and located hundreds of meters from the consulate of the United Arab Emirates and a security headquarters of the internal security forces in the region.

The statement stated that "a booby-trapped drone exploded at 9:35 pm on Biramam Road in Erbil."

"This resulted in light injuries to 3 citizens, while a restaurant and several cars were damaged," he added.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A security source told Reuters earlier that a drone attack had targeted the US consulate, but he did not give further details.

For his part, the Minister of Health of the Territory, Saman Barzanji, said in a statement that "there are no serious injuries, only 3 citizens were slightly injured and are being treated."

In recent months, Erbil witnessed several similar attacks, most of which were not claimed by any party.

In early May, 6 Katyusha rockets landed in an area adjacent to an oil refinery in Erbil Governorate.

In early April, the refinery was targeted by an attack using 3 Katyusha rockets, for which no party has claimed responsibility.

But the most violent attack was on March 13, when 12 ballistic missiles hit targets in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed the attack, saying that it targeted an "Israeli strategic center", while the region's authorities constantly deny the presence of any Israeli sites on its soil.

At the beginning of the year, Iraq witnessed an escalation in missile attacks and booby-trapped marches, coinciding with the second anniversary of the assassination of the former Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, who were killed in an American strike near Baghdad Airport.

These attacks are often attributed to Iraqi factions loyal to Iran.
