The European Parliament's big climate day started with an immediate gasp when a majority said no to the proposed changes to emissions trading.

On Wednesday, a long series of votes were held on climate issues and in one of the last was the question of when cars and vans that use fossil fuels should be phased out.

The European Parliament's line will now be that no new petrol and diesel cars will be allowed to be sold from 2035. In the next step, the European Parliament will now try to get the member states to agree to this ban in future final negotiations.

The basic proposal was challenged by a desire to proceed more slowly and “only reduce sales by 90 percent by 2035, but it was the tougher proposal for a total ban that won in Parliament.
