The proposal for a compulsory language test for people who want to become Swedish citizens is an issue where the Church of Sweden has previously been critical.

The current Archbishop Antje Jackelén spoke on the issue in connection with the proposal being out for consultation.

Her successor Martin Modéus has previously demanded an amnesty for unaccompanied minors.

In an interview in SVT's Aktuellt, the same day he was elected new archbishop, he was asked about the Church of Sweden's position on party political issues.

- We have a mission to follow Jesus.

When we do, we will sometimes be perceived as left and sometimes as right.

It is certainly not the case that there is a left or right agenda in the church.

So the Church of Sweden should be involved in current political issues when it feels right for you?

- When man and the value and dignity of creation are threatened, it is our duty to speak.

In the clip, the incoming archbishop answers more questions about his upcoming assignment.
