Two women were victims of drowning on Monday on the beaches of Pyrénées-Orientales.

The first, about 70 years old, apparently felt unwell in the water.

The drama occurred in Saint-Cyprien while she was bathing with a friend.

The efforts of a swimmer and the rescuers on the spot failed to revive her.

A second victim in absolute urgency

An hour later, another 76-year-old woman also drowned.

A man who saw her then alerted the rescuers who gave him a cardiopulmonary massage.

She was transported to Perpignan hospital in an absolute emergency.
