The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors said that a protester was shot dead yesterday, Monday, by security forces in the city of Omdurman, while the Forces for Freedom and Change said that they refuse to participate in the dialogue that begins tomorrow, Wednesday, and called for it by the United Nations, the African Union and the "IGAD" organization;

To find a solution to the political crisis in Sudan.

The Sudanese Doctors Committee (non-governmental) stated that the protester was most likely killed by a gunshot wound to the chest "with a birdshot weapon" in Omdurman, west of the capital, Khartoum, and a protester was also shot dead last Friday.

And the French news agency reported, quoting eyewitnesses, that the police forces fired tear gas canisters on Monday at hundreds of protesters who took to the streets calling for civilian rule, in the Burri district, east of the capital, and the city of Omdurman.

The protests erupted in Omdurman yesterday, Monday, after a visit by the head of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, to the region.

With the death of the protester on Monday, the total number of protesters who have died since the army seized power in October 2021 brings to 100.

Demonstrations organized by the resistance committees have continued in the neighborhoods since the army took control of power, and most of the dead in the protests were young men, and military leaders promised to conduct investigations into the deaths.

Sudan has been without a prime minister since last January, following the resignation of Abdullah Hamdok.

political dialogue

In a related context, a United Nations and African Union operation aimed at reaching a political agreement announced direct talks between the political forces tomorrow, Wednesday.

Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan lifted the state of emergency imposed at the end of last month since the army took control of the reins of power, in what was described as a confidence-building measure.

But the civil coalition of the "Forces of Freedom and Change", the former ruling, said - in a statement - that it will not participate in the talks, because it includes parties that he said "support the coup."

The Forces for Freedom and Change stated - in a statement yesterday - that the dialogue in which military and civilian parties participate "does not address the nature of the current crisis represented by the October 25 coup, which any political process must lead to its complete end and the establishment of a democratic civil authority."

The leader of the Forces for Freedom and Change, Al-Wath Al-Barer, stated in a press conference on Monday that the lack of participation in the dialogue is due to "the lack of favorable conditions for dialogue, such as the release of political detainees and the cessation of violence against demonstrators."

Triple Mechanism

On May 12, the tripartite mechanism of the United Nations, the African Union and the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), launched a national dialogue to address the political crisis in Sudan.

Freedom and Change is the coalition that led the protests that toppled the rule of former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, after a rule that lasted 3 decades.

After Bashir was overthrown, the Forces for Freedom and Change signed an agreement with the army to run a transitional period of 3 years, with general elections to be held after that.

However, the army commander, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, cut off the road to that in October 2021, as he seized full power and overthrew the civilian parties participating in the transitional government.
