British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a no-confidence vote by MPs from his own Conservative Party on Monday.

Johnson has long been under pressure for violating strict contact restrictions to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

He has already apologized for this, but has declined to resign.

Johnson has led the government since 2019.

Below is information about the processes:

How does a vote of no confidence in the Tories come about?

At least 15 percent of the Conservative MPs in the British House of Commons had to declare in writing to the party committee in 1922 that they no longer had any confidence in the prime minister.

The Conservatives (Tories) have 359 MPs, so it took 54 letters to the committee, which is made up of non-government MPs.

Chairman Graham Brady announced on Monday morning that the threshold had been exceeded and scheduled a vote for the same day between 6pm and 8pm local time (7pm to 9pm BST).

How does the vote of no confidence work?

All 359 Conservative MPs have voting rights.

To survive the vote, Johnson needs a majority of 180 votes.

What happens after the vote of no confidence?

If Johnson wins, no further no-confidence vote can be initiated against him for the next 12 months.

But that would not automatically secure his position, as the pressure on him could increase.

His predecessor Theresa May survived a vote of no confidence against her in December 2018 by a vote of 200 to 117.

However, the pressure on her because of Brexit was so great that she resigned less than six months later.

If Johnson loses, he must resign and cannot run for his party's election of a new prime minister.

Should there be several candidates for his successor, the Conservative MPs will vote in secret until only two names are left on the ballot.

The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated.

There is a few days between the individual elections, they usually take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Members of the Conservative Party vote by post to decide which of the two remaining candidates will become the new prime minister.

You must have been a party member for at least three months to be able to vote.

Who could succeed Johnson?

Foreign Minister Liz Truss and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak are being traded as Johnson's successors.

Truss always ranks high in her party's favor in polls.

Sunak has long been considered a favourite, but has recently lost popularity.

Among other things, he was criticized for not providing enough relief for citizens.

Like Johnson, Sunak has had to pay penalties for attending parties during the lockdown.

Opportunities are also given to former Secretary of State Jeremy Hunt, former Secretary of Defense Penny Mordaunt and current Secretary of Education Nadhim Zahawi.

Zahawi was responsible for organizing the successful vaccination campaign during the corona pandemic.
