Today, physical citizenship ceremonies take place around the country, ceremonies that were canceled during the pandemic years.

Last year, 89,354 people were granted Swedish citizenship - which is an increase of 9,179 compared to 2020. Just over half of the new Swedes are men, in contrast to 2020 when the majority were women.

According to Statistics Sweden, the peak is expected and is due to delays from the large influx of refugees in 2015. In order to obtain citizenship, it is required that the refugee has been resident in Sweden for at least four years.

Approximately every third person who was granted Swedish citizenship in 2021 comes from Syria.

Between 2015 and 2021, a total of 160,000 Syrian citizens immigrated to Sweden, of which 100,761 were granted citizenship.

Other citizenship exchangers that have increased compared to 2020 are people from Somalia, Afghanistan and Eritrea.

Botkyrka, Södertälje and Haparanda are the municipalities with the highest proportion of people with a foreign background.

In 232 of 290 Swedish municipalities, their share of the population has increased.
