Severe floods and storms in the Alps

Austria and Switzerland were hit by severe storms that caused damage and flooding across the Alps, with the worst-affected areas also reporting casualties.

The storms moved from west to east across Switzerland and Austria late on Sunday evening.

Austrian Broadcasting Corporation reported that several trees had fallen on the main road to Tauern in Salzburg.

Heavy traffic, as residents spend a long weekend, hampered storm removal operations.

The problems were exacerbated by the closure of two tunnels amid power outages.

The strong winds toppled the roofs of some houses, while heavy rain flooded the basements of the houses.

The electricity was temporarily cut off for about 30,000 homes in parts of the state of Upper Austria, in northern Austria.

Three people were injured in the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

Police said a tent was blown up, injuring two people.

In Switzerland, winds also damaged some buildings, with speeds of up to 132 kilometers per hour, as well as hail and heavy rain.
