Reports that North Korea is preparing to conduct a nuclear test

The International Atomic Energy Agency said on Monday that North Korea may be preparing to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said monitoring at the Punggi-ri underground nuclear test site in the north of the country indicated the reopening of the corridors.

He added, "At the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, we saw signs that one of the entrances was opened, possibly preparing for a nuclear test. A nuclear test would contradict UN Security Council resolutions and cause great concern."

He explained that North Korea's nuclear program constitutes "a flagrant violation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions," calling on Pyongyang to fulfill its obligations in accordance with Security Council resolutions and cooperate with the IAEA.

He said that North Korea should resolve all outstanding issues, especially those that arose during the absence of IAEA inspectors from the country.

It is reported that North Korea, which does not allow international inspectors into the country, conducted six nuclear tests at the Punggye-ri site between 2006 and 2007.

The IAEA, which is an independent organization within the United Nations system, monitors nuclear sites with the help of satellites.
