“The worst-case scenario would be to turn the conflict in Ukraine into the start of another global crusade,” Lieven said.

“As the fighting continues, Washington’s involvement in Ukraine’s war effort … has the potential to escalate into a large-scale and direct conflict between two great powers,” Lieven expressed concern.
