On the last day of the Pentecost weekend, there were full trains again in Hesse - and Frankfurt Airport also reported continued high activity.

In northern Hesse, trains in the direction of Frankfurt were “very, very well filled” on Monday, as a spokeswoman for the North Hesse Transport Association said.

One or the other cyclist stayed behind at the station because of the high occupancy rate and could not take the train that he had chosen.

"One does not know whether the desire for the excursion or the 9-euro ticket came first," said the spokeswoman.

But there were also many Pentecostal travelers like scout groups on the road.

A spokeswoman for the Hessian State Railways (HLB) reported full trains over the entire weekend, especially on the railway line between Giessen and Fulda.

"This is definitely due to the 9-euro ticket," said the HLB spokeswoman.

The Whitsun weekend coincided with the first weekend on which the 9-euro ticket could be used nationwide on all buses, trams, subways, suburban trains and local and regional trains.

"Peaks in passenger volume"

According to Deutsche Bahn, there were “peaks in passenger numbers” on regional trains over the long weekend, especially to tourist destinations.

However, according to the company, it is still too early for a detailed assessment, also with regard to the introduction of the 9-euro ticket.

In Hesse, for example, numerous day tourists were out and about in Rüdesheim am Rhein.

The railway company Vlexx recorded significantly more passengers, especially in the Regionalexpress 3, which runs from Frankfurt via Mainz to Saarbrücken.

"The good weather and the long holiday weekend certainly contributed to the fact that many day trippers were out," said a spokeswoman.

By midday, however, operations on Whit Monday were quieter again.

"However, we expect several return journeys and more heavily used trains from the afternoon and late afternoon." The airport operator Fraport reported on Whit Monday, as in the past few days, that Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt was busy.

More than 175,000 passengers were counted there every day.

"That's a lot and exceeded travel over the Easter weekend," said a spokesman.
