Bulgaria, northern Macedonia and Montenegro closed their airspace to the Russian foreign minister on Monday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry later confirmed that the minister's trip had been canceled, several international media reported.

The ministry's spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, is now accusing both the EU and NATO of cutting further ties with Russia, CNN reports.

- The countries bordering Serbia have closed the only route for Sergei Lavrov's aircraft, which were to depart for Serbia.

The Russian delegation was scheduled to hold talks in Belgrade, but EU and NATO member states have closed airspace, Zakharova said according to the Russian state news agency TASS.

Russia on ban: "Hostile action"

The Kremlin describes the countries' bans as a "hostile action" and Dimitrij Peskov, the Kremlin's spokesman, believes that such actions could cause problems for important diplomatic meetings.

At the same time, he points out that the ban does not prevent Moscow from maintaining contact with other "friendly countries", reports the news agency Reuters.

The plan was for the Russian Foreign Minister to stay in Belgrade for two days.

"This is depriving a sovereign state of the right to pursue foreign policy," Lavrov told AFP.

Lavrov nevertheless announces that Russia and Serbia have reached a preliminary agreement on continued deliveries of Russian gas to Serbia.

Historical bands

Like many other European countries, Serbia is a country that is highly dependent on Russian gas, but unlike others, Serbia has not tried to restrict its leadership after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In March, thousands of Serbs marched through the Serbian capital Belgrade to show their support for Russia's war in Ukraine.
