The first results of the legislative elections fell in French Polynesia.

In the three constituencies concerned, which voted on Saturday a week ahead of the metropolis, three duels will oppose the separatists, supported by the NUPES, and the autonomists of the local majority, supported by Together!, in the second round.

The candidates of Tapura Huiraatira, the party of Polynesian President Edouard Fritch, dominate the first two constituencies.

The outgoing independence MP Moetai Brotherson, who claims his affinities with LFI, is well placed to keep his seat in the third constituency.

Winner of the first round (34.26%), he will face Tuterai Tumahai (32.04%), a candidate supported by Tapura Huiraatira but a novice in politics.

Gaston Flosse's party ousted from the second round

The former Minister of Labor and Tourism, Nicole Bouteau (42.17%), will face in the second round a 21-year-old separatist, Tematai Le Gayic (19.61%) in the first constituency.

In the second, the duel promises to be tighter between Tepuaraurii Teriitahi (33.21%), president of the Tapura group in the local assembly, and Steve Chailloux (28.78%), a young independentist intellectual.

The party of former President Gaston Flosse, who has become a sovereigntist, failed to qualify a candidate in the second round, but remains the third political force.

Himself ineligible, it is his companion, Pascale Haiti who won 14.51% of the votes in the first constituency.

The National Rally, which only presented a candidate in the second constituency, collapsed with 2.2% of the vote.

The big winning abstention of the first round

The election was marked by very high abstention, over 50% in the three constituencies and peaking at 60.73% in the second constituency.

The historically low abstention, reflecting a lack of interest in national politics, can also be explained by a three-day weekend that many Tahitians spend on the neighboring island, Moorea, or by a gathering of many followers of the Protestant community, one of the most represented churches in Polynesia.

The second round will take place on June 18.
