The Paris Agreement is an international and legally binding treaty that establishes measures to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

To reach this long-term temperature goal, countries aim to peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible to achieve a climate-neutral planet by mid-century.

Its implementation requires economic and social transformation, based on the best available science, and works in a five-year cycle of increasingly ambitious climate action.

.

It entered into force on November 4, 2016 and, currently, 192 countries are part of it, plus the European Union.

And it is that, undoubtedly, all the agents of society, both public and private, as well as the general public, must work together to transform the industrial and economic model towards a more sustainable and equitable one for all.

Naturgy: a new sustainable model is possible

In this sense, Naturgy stands out as one of the great companies that already has in its DNA the commitment to be a key player in the energy transition towards a circular and decarbonized economy model, in line with the Paris Agreement.

The energy multinational is committed to being carbon neutral by 2050.

How are you going to achieve it?

Through four strategic environmental axes: :

  • Governance and environmental management.

  • Climate change and energy transition.

  • Circular economy and eco-efficiency.

  • Natural capital and biodiversity.

Bet on renewable energies

Within the framework of this commitment to leading the energy transition, Naturgy continues with its strategy of developing a renewable portfolio at an international level, focusing on stable geographies and projects in the initial phase of development.

Recently, the company has begun construction of its first renewable energy facility in the United States, the 7V Solar Ranch photovoltaic plant, in the state of Texas, which will have 300 MW of peak power.

The investment allocated to this project will amount to 264 million euros.

It is expected to enter into commercial operation before the end of 2023, will occupy an area of more than 800 hectares and will be located in Fayette County, East Texas.

The installation will consist of about 555,600 photovoltaic modules, which will generate 560 GWh of electricity per year.

This first Naturgy photovoltaic plant in the United States will also be the company's largest with this technology in the world.

Its strategic location, close to large urban centers such as Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas, will allow it to supply an area with high potential demand and continuous growth.

Regarding this plant, the president of Naturgy, Francisco Reynés, has stated that "the start of construction of this new facility is a milestone for Naturgy, not only because it is the first in the United States and the company's largest photovoltaic plant in the world, but because it demonstrates our firm commitment to the development of renewable energies and to the energy transition".

The energy multinational is also leading the development of renewable gas in Spain as one of the fundamental axes of decarbonisation in the short and medium term.

Renewable gases (mainly biomethane and hydrogen) are called to be an active agent as a source of renewable energy, facilitating the integration of gas and electricity systems, supporting effective waste management and contributing to the circular economy.

They help to solve the environmental problem of the emissions associated with waste management, which until now were released into the atmosphere, and valorize both waste from urban sources, as well as from agricultural, livestock or wastewater treatment plants, creating circular economy models where the waste producer also benefits.

They also contribute to the economic development of rural areas and territorial cohesion in areas with demographic challenges.

Naturgy progresses in its commitments in its environmental, social and governance commitments

The energy multinational advances on the path of decarbonisation and in its commitment to fight climate change through the reduction of emissions and the protection of biodiversity.

Thus, it has achieved an increase in installed renewable power to 33%.

The group plans to invest 14,000 million euros until 2025, of which approximately two thirds will be dedicated to promoting renewable generation, multiplying by three the current 5 GW in operation until reaching the nearly 15 GW forecast in 2026.

Between 2017 and 2021, Naturgy has reduced direct greenhouse gas emissions by 37%.

On the other hand, the company carried out 302 biodiversity initiatives last year (25% of them voluntary) and reached 635 hectares environmentally restored.

In addition, 57% of its waste has been recovered or recycled.

Initiatives for sustainability and energy transition

To facilitate access to solar energy and self-consumption, Naturgy has launched a comprehensive and personalized solution called 'Naturgy Solar'.

Aimed at both individuals and communities of owners, SMEs and companies, it offers a design tailored to the client, in addition to the management and treatment of permits and subsidies, as well as payment facilities.

With this proposal, the consumer will be able to save up to 40% on the installation of the panels and up to 70% if batteries are added for energy storage.

And to encourage self-consumption, the company offers a price of €0.11/kWh for the purchase of electricity that the customer does not spend.

Another of Naturgy's steps to support the energy transition can be seen in the recent adherence by its president, Francisco Reynés, to the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders.

This alliance, made up of more than a hundred multinational executives from different sectors, works to achieve the total decarbonisation of the economy and thus achieve a more sustainable planet.

There is no doubt that we must take action.

Naturgy is clear about it and a commitment is made in which there is no turning back.

Our planet deserves a new model of life and together we will achieve it.
