Australia today celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Mabo ruling.
This landmark court decision abolished the concept of
terra nullius
under which the English had "
legally
" taken possession of Australia.
This paved the way for the process of returning land to Indigenous communities in Australia.
This anniversary date coincides, within a few days, with the election of a new government, which has promised to strengthen the rights of Aborigines.

It was in these terms that Judge Sir Gerard Brennan explained, on June 3, 1992, the earthquake he was about to cause in Australia.
His decision, since celebrated every year, is nevertheless content to recognize a truth recognized by all: Australia was already populated before the arrival of the English.
The main consequence of this decision is that it opens up the possibility for Aborigines to ask the government to return land to them.
The process is long and not always adapted to communities with an oral culture, and where in some cases the very concept of ownership does not exist.
Towards a body representing aboriginal peoples
This remains a major step forward in the history of Aboriginal people, who may soon be granted
new rights

The newly elected Labor government has indeed undertaken to meet one of their main demands: the creation of an advisory body, representative of all the indigenous communities of Australia, which could give its opinion on all the laws re.
