The Security Council renews the mandate of UNITAMS in Sudan for another year

On Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) for one year, according to the United Nations News Center.

In a statement issued today, the Security Council said that the new resolution provides for the extension of the mandate of UNITAMS until June 3, 2023, and requests the Secretary-General to continue to submit reports to the Council every 90 days on the implementation of the mandate of UNITAMS.

The UN Security Council affirmed all its previous presidential resolutions and statements relating to the situation in Sudan, and also reaffirmed its strong commitment to the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Sudan.

Council members described the short, one-page text of the resolution as a "technical extension".

The term "technical extension" is commonly used by diplomats to describe a brief resolution that extends the mandate of the peace process without changing its mandate or core functions.
