Modification of the pronunciation of Turkey's name in United Nations documents
The United Nations has accepted an official request from Turkey to change the way the country's name is pronounced with Turkish in Turkish, a spokesperson for the international organization told German News Agency on Friday.
The change took effect after the United Nations received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.
According to the letter, the country also wishes to be referred to by its Turkish pronunciation in future French and Spanish documents.
The leadership in Ankara has for some time been particularly interested in the English translation of the name of the country - among other things, since the English name of the country (Turki) also refers to the turkey.
It is noteworthy that the name in Arabic and Russian will remain unchanged.
The change applies only to the official languages of the United Nations.
German is not one of them, but a call from the Turkish foreign minister said the country would call itself the same in the future in German.
The move to change the name follows a decree issued by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in December to switch to writing Turkey's name according to the new pronunciation in English, French and German, among other languages, and also when labeling export products.
Erdogan's decree stated that the name of Turkey with this drawing represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation in the best way," according to the official Anatolia News Agency.
