news of the day

Exactly one hundred days ago, Russia invaded Ukraine.

On the occasion of this sad anniversary, everyone went there with their prognosis on the continuation of the conflict.

"Victory will be ours," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a short video posted on Instagram, while the Kremlin believed it had achieved "certain results", promising to continue its offensive until "all objectives of the special military operation are fulfilled".

On the side of the UN and NATO, opinions are less clear-cut.

"This war has and will have no winner," said Amin Awad, UN coordinator in Ukraine.

According to Jens Stoltenberg, it will be necessary to prepare "for a war of attrition" in the "long term", which will only end "if Russia put an end to its aggression".

The phrase

Ukraine is moving towards the European family

Denys Chmygal, the Ukrainian Prime Minister, considered that the country was advancing “with confidence towards its objective: to live in a democratic, free country, within the European family”.

Kyiv hopes to obtain official status as a candidate for membership of the European Union by the end of June.

The number

Around 20% of Ukrainian territory is currently controlled by Russia.

This represents 125,000 km2 including the Crimea occupied since 2014. In comparison, it is a little more than the Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur regions combined.

The trend of the day

The EU has launched its 6th sanctions package against Russia.

These are the toughest since decided by the Twenty-Seven since it is a progressive embargo on the major part of Russian oil, an important source of income for Moscow.

The cessation of imports by ship of crude oil will take place within six months and that of petroleum products within eight months.

The resale of petroleum products from Russian crude is also prohibited within eight months within the EU and to third countries.

The blacklist of Europeans has been extended to around sixty Russian personalities.

The sanctions also record the exclusion of three Russian financial institutions from the Swift system, including the country's first bank Sberbank.
