Kim Jong-un has sent a message to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 70-year reign as head of the British throne.

The North Korean leader sent his "congratulations (...) on the occasion of your country's national holiday".

This is not the first time that Kim Jong-un has sent a message to the monarch.

Kim Jong-un has congratulated Queen Elizabeth II on her 70-year reign, the Foreign Ministry announced in Pyongyang.

"I send my congratulations to you and your people on the occasion of your country's national day, your Majesty's official birthday," the North Korean leader wrote in his message to the queen.

London and Pyongyang established diplomatic relations in 2000. The two countries have maintained their respective embassies, despite the deterioration of relations between North Korea and Western countries in recent years due to Pyongyang's weapons program.

The British Embassy in Pyongyang is however currently closed, due to draconian entry and exit restrictions imposed by North Korea during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, the official KCNA agency reported that Queen Elizabeth II congratulated Kim Jong-un on the anniversary of the founding of North Korea on September 9.
