A 59-year-old man from Croatia died on the night of May 27 to 28 in his cell at La Talaudière remand center (Loire).

As he was preparing to be released on parole, from next week, the prisoner was killed by one of his fellow prisoners, as reported by

The autopsy having quickly ruled out the thesis of a fatal illness, a preliminary investigation for murder was opened by the prosecution and entrusted to the departmental security.

Three days after the events, the victim's three fellow prisoners were taken into custody for intentional homicide.

Two of them pointed to "violent beatings" delivered by the third fellow prisoner to the victim.

If he denied being the author of the fatal blows, the main suspect, a native of Montbrison and aged 29, was indicted on Thursday and placed under criminal arrest warrant in another establishment of the penitentiary inter-region.

The multi-recidivist man, notably convicted nine times for acts of aggravated violence, and imprisoned for three months at La Talaudière (18-month sentence for domestic violence), is awaiting his trial before an assize court.
