Every year in France, as part of the public health and tobacco control policy initiated by the government, the price of tobacco increases.

Depending on the different brands, a pack of cigarettes is around 10 euros at the moment.

But other European countries want to set up even higher tariffs.

This is particularly the case in the Netherlands, which aims for a price oscillating between 30 and 47 euros by 2040, reports RTBF on Wednesday.

The aim of such an increase is to significantly reduce the number of smokers, currently estimated at 20% of the population.

Maarten van Ooijen, the country's state secretary for public health, wants a reduction of at least 13% in 2040.

Two extra euros each year

Currently, the price of a pack of cigarettes in the Netherlands is eight euros.

This should increase to ten euros by 2025, according to a government agreement.

The idea is to increase this price by two euros each year, indicated the Secretary of State, who believes that this is the best way to encourage smokers to quit smoking permanently.

According to the Belgian media

,

the country would like to follow the example of Australia, which has made the fight against smoking one of its priorities.

There, a packet of cigarettes can reach 25 euros and smoking is prohibited in almost all public places in large cities.

This is particularly the case in Melbourne, for example.

In the Netherlands, the text providing for the drastic increase in prices has not yet been ratified and could be confronted with the dissatisfaction of smokers.
