The Emirates Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security Authority confirmed that the validity of the identity card is related to the number of years of residence granted, and the renewal of the old identity card cannot be postponed until the expiry of its validity period.

This came as part of the authority's response to inquiries received from readers to the newspaper "Emirates Today" regarding the procedures followed when issuing the golden residency, and whether they can postpone the renewal of the current identity card, issued with the regular residency, until the expiry of its validity period.

In response to a question about whether the holder of the golden residency can leave the residency of his children on the regular residency and not convert it to gold, the authority confirmed that the matter is optional and not mandatory.

She explained that obtaining an Emirates ID card is mandatory for UAE residents, including Emiratis, citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and expatriates residing in the country.

Anyone who falls under one of these categories is required to apply for an ID card from the authority, and to renew it within 30 days of its expiry date.

The authority sends a notification via text message, before the card expires.

The validity of the ID card for citizens is five or 10 years, according to the citizen's choice.

The validity of the card for citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries is five years, while the card expires for residents with the expiry of the residence.

It is worth noting that the authority has recently suspended the issuance of the residence voucher for foreigners residing in the country (as of last April 11) in the context of developing the services provided to enhance the happiness of customers and replacing the Emirates ID card issued to the foreigner residing in the country as an alternative to prove his residence.

The authority explained that the cancellation decision came in implementation of the decision of the Council of Ministers to support the development of the services provided and to implement best practices and to achieve flexibility that aims to reduce the steps associated with the process of issuing and renewing the residence to be associated with the identity card in a new unified form that includes the issuance and renewal of the residence and identity card services in one application, instead of requests. The previous individual, based on the improvement and development processes related to the customer journey.

The Authority's smart application allows obtaining the electronic copy of the ID card in support of the flexibility of use upon request, stressing that the new generation of the Emirates ID card issued to the foreigner residing in the country, includes the details of the residence voucher, (personal and professional data, the issuer and other readable data on the face of the card and the details Enhanced implicit via electronic link technologies), which enhances the added value of using the ID card to prove personal identity.
