The Ministry of Community Development presented a recent study conducted by the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the results of which showed that one child out of every 44 in the world, at the age of eight, suffers from an autism spectrum disorder, and that about 35% of them have intellectual disabilities.

The psychologist in the Department of Care and Rehabilitation of People of Determination in the Ministry, Dr. Rawhi Obeidat, who discussed and analyzed the results of the study during an awareness workshop attended by «Emirates Today», that «these data cannot be completely generalized to all countries of the world, but it is a reliable indicator. During the investigation of cases of autism in the country," adding that "the facts concluded by the study deserve the attention of specialists.

It also supports community awareness efforts on the causes and method of dealing with autism cases.”

Obeidat attributed the high number of cases, which the study indicated, to the high rate of awareness among families and their seeking treatment, and consequently the documentation of cases, in addition to the broadening of the classification umbrella to include non-traditional autism cases, the development and deepening of measurement and diagnostic tools, and the development of specialists' skills.

He pointed to remarkable results in the study, such as the suffering of about 35% of all children with autism from intellectual disabilities.

This is a different percentage from what was previously approved, when the percentage was 75%.

He attributed the decline to the expansion of the autism spectrum diagnosis umbrella, and the entry of new categories within the common autism disorder categories, in addition to the unspecified categories of disorder.

Obeidat stated that the study of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which was conducted on children aged between three and 17 years, also indicated that 17% of children in the world suffer from a developmental disability, which includes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cerebral palsy, or One of the degrees of intellectual disability, or learning difficulties.

He added that the results of the study showed that the percentage of males with autism is higher than females, reaching four males for every female, but the American Autism Association said that the increase in the number of males is due to the lack of symptoms on females clearly, or they may not originally shown.
