A 49-year-old gendarme was found dead this Tuesday morning in Versailles (Yvelines).

The man committed suicide in the premises of the gendarmerie with his service weapon.

It was colleagues who discovered it when they arrived at work, reports

Le Parisien

.

The forties, who worked as a warrant officer for the departmental road safety squadron (ESDR), had a wife and two daughters aged 16 and 21.

His colleagues are all in shock.

The Maison de la gendarmerie Foundation has opened an online kitty to support the relatives of the victim.

A growing phenomenon

This is the second suicide of a French gendarme in less than 24 hours.

A few hours earlier, a young 27-year-old soldier ended her life at her home, also with her official weapon, in Montaigu (Vendée).

Suicides among law enforcement are on the rise in France.

While there have been between 30 and 40 each year for the past few years, the year 2022 promises to be particularly dramatic, notes

Le Parisien

.

In January, there were already ten suicides among the police and gendarmes.
