The story began, according to what the "Jerusalem Post" newspaper reported on June 26, 2006, when Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit felt some tiredness when the clock indicated 4:35.

It is true that the tank was secured, but the instructions of the Israeli internal intelligence "Shin Bet" were also clear: everyone should beware of the possibility of Hamas fighters infiltrating the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers, a warning that was repeated during a meeting of the Israeli unit.

Shalit did not listen well to the warnings, and during a light nap, his tank was subjected to a missile attack by the resistance fighters. The Israeli soldier rose from his sleep in terror, without a weapon in his hand, a helmet on his head, or a protective jacket to protect him from the hail of bullets.

Shalit refused to get out of the tank, as did his two colleagues who were killed in the ambush, and then quickly entered into prayer for his life, before finally surrendering himself to the Hamas fighters.

Shalit actually escaped with his life and did not meet the fate of his two colleagues, but he remained in the captivity of the resistance fighters for a long time.

Israel needed to do a lot in order to liberate “the son of all,” as the Israeli public opinion described it at the time, as the occupation released 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in a huge deal called “Wafa Al-Ahrar,” which included many prisoners of the “Fatah” and “Hamas” movements. and "Islamic Jihad" and others.

Among all those names, there was a man whom the resistance managed to snatch out among another group of men, and whom Israel greatly regretted later, "Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar."

The road to two decades of imprisonment

Al-Majdal Ashkelon is one of the oldest Palestinian cities, located to the northeast of Gaza. It fell in 1948 to the occupation army, which changed its name to Ashkelon.

From this city came the family of Yahya Al-Sinwar, who did not know his hometown because he was born in the “Khan Yunis” refugee camp in 1962. Like the rest of the camp’s children, poverty and harsh life left a great impact on Sinwar’s childhood, as he witnessed since his childhood the attacks carried out by the state Occupation against the people of the camps.

Sinwar studied at the Islamic University of Gaza, obtained a bachelor's degree in Arabic, and headed the "Islamic Bloc" during his university studies, which is the student arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine.

This period was important in his life, as it helped the Palestinian leader prepare for the roles he later assumed within the Hamas movement, and although the man was not one of the movement’s first founders, he became one of its cadres who wrote the directions and foundations of the Islamic resistance for many years.

The Palestinian leader saw that breaking the occupation would only be accomplished by eliminating all of its tools, the first of these tools being the poisoned dagger of agents that penetrates the Palestinian fabric.

At that time, Sinwar suggested to Sheikh Ahmed Yassin some ideas that would strengthen the security aspect of the resistance, most notably the establishment of the Security and Advocacy Agency "Majd", which handled the internal security files.

At that time, Sinwar was able to lead a group of security cadres and track down a number of agents who worked for the occupation, and his group succeeded in eliminating them.

Over time, "Majd" became the first nucleus for the establishment of the internal security system of Hamas, and its role, in addition to conducting investigations with Israeli agents, became to trace the trails of intelligence officers and the Israeli security services themselves, and the work of the service expanded until it sometimes overthrew people inside Hamas who were accused of collaborating with the occupying state. .

Yahya Sinwar

This case constituted a source of great questioning surrounding the mysterious man in Hamas, especially given his personal supervision of the file of clients within the movement.

Sources close to the resistance said in an interview with "

Maidan

" that the name of Sinwar was very present in this case because at that time he held the head of the security and military work in the political office of Hamas, although the reality says that these punitive measures are not carried out within the movement except through legal and judicial committees Specialized, and if these committees impose the death penalty, the ratification of such an important decision does not happen until after full knowledge of Hamas officials.

The same sources confirmed that there is a detriment against the head of Hamas in Gaza because of this file, while everyone knows that the movement operates by the shura system and has an internal system that applies to everyone, and therefore reaching the top of the pyramid in the movement is through fair elections that are won by the person who is able to Persuading the largest number of voters with his idea and project.

Sinwar's internal movements were not far from the eyes of the occupation. The Israeli occupation army arrested a Palestinian leader in 1982, that is, before the establishment of the "Majd" apparatus, and he was then sentenced to six months in prison on charges of participating in security activities against Israel.

However, the heaviest sentence came on January 20, 1988, when he was sentenced to life imprisonment four times, in addition to a 30-year prison sentence, after being charged with charges related to establishing a security apparatus and participating in the establishment of the movement's first military apparatus, which was known as "" Palestinian Mujahideen.

Sinwar spent 23 years in Israeli prisons as a captive, until his liberation came as part of the prisoner exchange deal in 2011, which was known in the media as the "Shalit deal."

Closer to the enemy

Over the course of his long years in captivity, Sinwar was a good follower of Israeli society, and he constantly followed up on what was published in the Hebrew media. He was also acquainted with many studies written in Hebrew that dealt with the Israeli internal situation, which was greatly reflected in his style and dealing with the occupation society.

After his release from prison, Sinwar participated in the internal elections of Hamas in 2012, at which time he won membership in the movement's political bureau. He also assumed responsibility for supervising the military apparatus of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

As a result of these strong movements outside the captivity, the United States pressured him to put him, along with two Hamas leaders, on the list of international terrorist figures (they are “Mohammed Deif,” the commander-in-chief of Qassam, and “Rawhi Mushtaha,” a member of the movement’s political bureau), and Israel placed Sinwar on the wanted list for liquidation. in the Gaza Strip.

Despite these restrictions, Sinwar was elected head of the political bureau in Gaza, succeeding his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, which constituted a turning point in the presence of Hamas inside and outside the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Radio France International website indicated that Sinwar was the real architect of the negotiations that Cairo witnessed in October 2017, aimed at reactivating the Palestinian reconciliation file.

The Guardian newspaper, in an article in 2017, considered that the arrival of Sinwar will put an end to the internal competition in Hamas between the political and military wings, and redefine the movement’s policy, especially in light of the challenges facing Gaza.

The British newspaper added that the election of Sinwar was a clear indication of the priority of Gaza, as the man sees in the Strip a priority for political and military activity, in contrast to the previous approach that sought rapprochement with the leadership of the Palestinian Authority.

But far from what the Guardian concluded, Radio France International indicated that Sinwar was the real architect of the negotiations in Cairo in October 2017 aimed at reactivating the Palestinian reconciliation file.

Al-Sinwar’s steps towards Fatah began to bear fruit partially at the same time. Some Fatah leaders praised Sinwar and considered him a stubborn and honest mujahid with his people and his cause. “Raafat Alyan,” a leader in the Fatah movement, expressed his pride in what the factions did in Gaza last year in the recent war. With Israel, after it was able to prove its ability to respond forcefully in the face of the Israeli attacks on Jerusalem.

The sharpness of Sinwar's positions was clearly demonstrated in his last speech at the beginning of May 2022, in which he announced the escalation against the occupation forces, as he attacked the occupation authorities in two press conferences he held a few days ago, warning of a major "religious war" in the region if the Israeli violations continued and the silence continued. The international community towards the Zionist encroachments in occupied Jerusalem.

Sinwar's escalation did not stop at this point, but rather exceeded it to the threat of the demise of Israel if it continued its plans to Judaize Jerusalem, noting that the resistance planned to end the last battle with a missile launch of 300 missiles, but changed it out of respect and honor for the Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

At the same time, the head of Hamas in Gaza stressed that the resistance will burn everything in order to improve the lives of the Palestinian people.

Soon, Sinwar addressed the Islamic movement in the occupied Palestinian interior, and considered that the Unified List does not play any real role, but rather constitutes a safety net for the Zionist government, which took the decision to desecrate Al-Aqsa Mosque, accusing some faces of the list of treason.

In turn, Mansour Abbas, head of the United Arab List Party, did not delay in responding to Sinwar, saying in a press statement that his party does not owe anyone anything, and it works for the benefit of the Arab community and the Palestinian people, stressing at the same time that the efforts led by The Arab List is in order to promote tolerance and comprehensive peace between the "people of Israel" and the Palestinian people.

Mansour Abbas

Although some leaders of the Arab List supported Mansour in his statements, and considered that the work the resistance is doing in Gaza is different from what they are doing with the Arabs inside, other personalities said that there was no need to respond to Sinwar because the Arab List would gain nothing by entering into disputes with Hamas, especially since this confrontational discourse will not change on the part of Sinwar, the man who troubles Tel Aviv, is not very convinced of compromise, and appears ready, according to his statements and field moves, to go as far as possible to confront the occupation.

The man that Israel fears, alive and dead

It is no secret that the occupying power considers Yahya Sinwar a dangerous enemy, describing him as stubborn and head of the hawkish wing of Hamas, and the Israeli government considers him an "extremist" version compared to other leaders.

The Institute for Israeli Policy and Strategy, affiliated with the Herzliya Center, published a report on Sinwar's personality, in which he considered that the latter is changing the rules of the game with Israel. Experiment and its wrong and right results.

The same source gave the example of the recent war that Hamas entered against Israel for the sake of Jerusalem, even if there were no frictions in Gaza that justified this direct confrontation.

The Israeli Institute recommended that the Israeli government prepare for an additional battle that may be close.

Despite the recent Israeli calls to assassinate Sinwar, as he is the first person responsible for inciting the operations that the occupied Palestinian interior witnessed recently, some observers have ruled out that the occupying country would assassinate the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. right Now.

Moreover, Tel Aviv realizes that the assassination of Sinwar on its part will be a spark that will burn Israeli interests and push the occupation government to confront two hot fronts in Gaza and the West Bank at the same time, not to mention the fragile Arab interior in Israeli society.

For its part, the opposition, led by former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, began to move to bring down the government of "Naftali Bennett".

Israel is very afraid of the reactions of the Palestinian side, which seemed clear and strong recently, as the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip witnessed a mass rally in support of Sinwar because of the incitement and threat he was exposed to by the Israelis.

Statements in support of the President of Hamas in Gaza continued, beginning with the spokesman for the Qassam Brigades, "Abu Obeida", who warned Israel, saying that touching the Sinwar would mean a comprehensive earthquake in the region, while Khaled Al-Batsh, a leader in the Islamic Jihad, considered that harming any of the leaders of the Palestinian resistance It means opening the gates of hell.

The occupying power sees in Sinwar nothing but an enemy like other enemies of Israel, as he is a criminal who despises the blood of its sons and threatens the security and peace of the Zionist state, but despite that, the Israeli government will have to exercise restraint and long-term restraint with Sinwar if it wants to recover the four Israeli prisoners who Hamas keeps them until the moment, as negotiations will never be easy, especially with a leader who himself was released from captivity in a previous deal, and was even originally opposed to the formula of the agreement at the time, even though he granted him freedom. He tells us about the nature of the man and the approach of the movement under his leadership, and foretells the government in Tel Aviv of the difficulty of the upcoming task in confronting Hamas.
