  • Coronavirus Cádiz takes its Carnival from 2022 to June

The General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions has decided to suspend the performance that a

chirigota of fifteen prisoners from the

Puerto III prison was going to carry out today in the Cadiz Carnival Group Contest (COAC).

"Not given the appropriate conditions for the development of the activity, the center has decided not to be part of it," as reported by Penitentiary Institutions in a note.

"The Penitentiary Administration has the legal obligation to ensure the

confidentiality of the data of all persons deprived of liberty

", the institution has indicated.

For its part, the

City Council of Cádiz

, has stated in a statement that the activity, framed in a

project for the reintegration of prisoners

, has been canceled "after the dissemination of information that does not conform to reality about components of the group that I was going to attend the Gran Teatro Falla as a guest with the chirigota

Adivina, riddle SA

to sing before the start of the fifth session of the semifinals".

This information "which does not conform to reality" indicated that

one of the members of the group was convicted of pederasty.

Despite the information being untrue, the General Secretariat has chosen to suspend

it "considering that after these publications a

hostile environment

could be generated " that could

harm the inmates "with a view to their social reintegration."

This reintegration is also "the priority objective" of this project, in which

only inmates convicted of minor and third-degree crimes participated.

The Cádiz City Council "abides and respects the decision made by the prison authority, and reaffirms its commitment to social reintegration" for which it "keeps its hand outstretched to

celebrate this initiative in years to come"

, according to the note.

The group

Guess, guess SA

was going to open today, Wednesday as a guest, the last of the

semifinals of the Official Contest of Carnival Groups

(COAC).

The

fifteen inmates that make it up were going to attend the function

, accompanied by

nine members of the management team of Puerto III

and without surveillance by the State Security Forces and Corps, given its

low-danger profile and zero risk of breach

.

They were going to exhibit a repertoire prepared especially for the occasion and in which the center's management hoped that it would reflect

"the effort and dedication of the participants during these months"

of preparing a performance that they will not finally be able to perform.

The director of the penitentiary center,

Esther Serrano Escobar

, held a meeting with the mayor of Cádiz, José María González, and with the Councilor for Culture and Festivals, Lola Cazalilla, to publicize a project aimed at "achieving the tasks of re-education and reintegration of the inmates entrusted to the institution".

In addition, from the direction of the center it was expected that the Falla would "reflect the effort and dedication of the participants during these months, with a performance worthy of a festival as popular and emblematic as the Cádiz Carnival"

Bet on inclusion

Before the suspension of the inmates' performance, the Councilor for Culture and Festivals,

Lola Cazalilla,

had stressed that "this government team believes that reintegration is the true triumph of criminal law and initiatives like these

fight against the stigma

they suffer most of the people who have served their sentences and join society".

"The conviction not only has a component of punishment, but also of inclusion, and we bet on inclusion," she added.

Cazalilla underlined that "the city of Cadiz and the Falla Theater have always been supportive and committed spaces" and has been "convinced that

this chirigota will be welcomed with the fraternity and humanity

that characterizes us".
