• What if the statue of the Virgin and Child with three arms, located in Ferrette, in the Haut-Rhin, became a place of passage for tourists in Alsace?

  • The monument, hitherto unknown, will be renovated.

  • It is very particular with a child with three arms, the three not being visible at the same time to the naked eye.

Haut-Koenigsbourg, Strasbourg Cathedral, the Wine Route and soon… the Virgin and Child with three arms?

Totally unknown to tourists today, this 19th century Baroque sculpture could soon become a place of passage for tourists in Alsace.

“It could make an additional visit point,” confirms Corinne Rabault, the mayor of Ferrette, a small town (800 inhabitants) in Haut-Rhin.

An old medieval city close to Switzerland already quite busy thanks to its architecture, its dwarfs' cave and especially its castle "which welcomes around 20,000 visitors a year".

But then, why would all eyes be on the famous "Madonna and Child with three arms" about 2 meters high?

Her name indicates it: the offspring she bears have three upper limbs.

Two rest on his mother's chest and the last one surrounds her neck.

An invisible feature without help!

“Wherever you stand, you only see a maximum of two arms.

It's very original, ”explains Véronique Keiff, the delegate of the Heritage Foundation in Alsace.

His organization launched this Monday, May 30, a collection of donations to finance the restoration.

The objective is to raise 5,000 euros out of the approximately 12,000 euros for the project.

"The European Community of Alsace will also participate, the Grand-Est region, other patrons," she says, delighted to help showcase this work by local artist and former notary Philippe- Xavier Desgrandchamps (1794-1880),

Because the monument was, until then, not very visible.

“He was on the terrace of a restaurant and we did not see him.

The owner has changed and he gave it to us graciously”, continues Corinne Rabault, who plans to install the statue “near the church”.

Where its particularity will not fail to challenge.
