• The Roubaix LPA moved into new premises at the end of 2021.

  • Because of the standards, the organization can no longer ensure its shelter activity.

  • The LPA hopes to benefit from a derogation before the summer, a period loaded with abandonments.

The good news will have been short-lived.

The former premises of the LPA in Roubaix were no longer livable, neither for the employees nor for the volunteers and even less for the boarders with hair.

After years of hardship, everyone was finally able to move, at the end of last year, to new buildings, still in Roubaix.

In short, the good life.

Well no.

An imbroglio of standards now prevents the LPA from practicing its shelter activity and having its animals adopted.

As we wrote in

20 Minutes

, the LPA of Roubaix took possession of its new premises, quai de Gand, last November.

Employees were delighted to be able to “finally work in new, healthy, clean and suitable premises”.

Rejoicings which quickly ended when the prefecture notified them of the ban on receiving the public "because the new premises are too close to homes".

As many animals but less places

“We can only carry out the activity of pound because of the standards on the proximity with the dwellings.

And this activity is highly regulated, implying in particular that the premises are only accessible to employees of the establishment, ”explains Marion Lepage, the manager of the LPA of Roubaix.

This effectively excludes the possibility of welcoming volunteers and individuals wishing to adopt an animal.

As a result, it is impossible to ensure the refuge part which is nevertheless an important part of the activity of the LPA.

"On average, we were shooting three or four adoptions a day, or several hundred a year," said the manager.

Especially since the Roubaix LPA, which covers 82 municipalities, has seen the number of places available to accommodate drop in its new premises.

About 30% less for cats, which are nevertheless the most numerous animals in their walls.

“For the moment, we manage by placing animals in our Lille branch and with foster families.

But it's the summer that scares us,” admits Marion Lepage.

Basically, the structure will not be able to absorb a large flow if the abandonments skyrocket.

Admittedly, the lease of the LPA of Roubaix is only three years, while waiting to find a definitive place.

But in the meantime, solutions must be found.

The volunteers mobilized, in particular through an online petition asking that the shelter activity be authorized.

On the LPA side, we do not despair of a gesture from the authorities: “It is possible to obtain a derogation, we are working on a file in this direction.

It can go quickly as it can take time, ”says Marion Lepage.

But time is running out, summer is coming soon.
